Websites should all serve their own unique purpose. Most of the time websites are multifaceted, yet each is based around a core purpose. This is generally driven by your intended website audience. We could categorise websites into the following:

1. Those that are geared towards selling products
2. Those that are geared towards providing practical information, and
3. Those that are purely there for consumer entertainment.

In order to identify and define what your website’s core purpose is, there are a few steps you can follow. Firstly, as previously mentioned, you need to identify your website’s target audience. Equally as important, is to remember that a website should help your company reach the objectives set in your business plan, it is there to serve your customers, not you.

Next, you can review your website’s statistics.

Statistics play a huge role in defining or even redefining the main purpose for your website. This can assist you in learning more about your consumers, what interests them and even how they are accessing your website (mobile, desktop, location, etc). It is about taking the time to find out the main preferences of your target audience.

Lastly, you need to think like an end-user. Consider WHY a customer would be visiting your website, HOW they would navigate through your website and WHAT they are looking to accomplish there.

The bottom line is – your website needs to be consumer serving. Because of this, it is imperative that you identify and define your website’s core purpose rather than seeing a website as another tick off your to-do list when running a business. A website is an entirely separate platform of generating income for your company – so why not maximise the opportunity?
