Are you familiar with hashtags and what they can do for your brand’s digital presence?
Put simply … by adding a few relevant hashtags to your brand’s social media posts, you immediately amplify how many people see your post (also known as reach) and how many engagements your post receives (this refers to any/all interactions that followers have with your content).
Let’s start with the basics: What are hashtags?
Hashtags are a topics that make finding content of a similar subject or theme a lot easier. You can even create your own hashtag by merely using ‘#’ followed by words or short sentences with no spaces.
How do hashtags work?
Ultimately, when you include a hashtag in your posts, you feed your post through into a world of content relating to that topic – you can even browse the content in the hashtags to get more inspiration for your own. Very similar to how you follow Facebook pages, Twitter accounts and Instagram profiles, you can also ‘follow’ a hashtag that interests you. Once you’ve clicked follow, you’ll start seeing random posts with that hashtag pop up on your feed. In other words, posts from accounts that you aren’t following, but would maybe like to giving that their content is synonymous with the topic (hashtag) you’re interested in – and this is how you grow your brand.
How can hashtags help my brand grow?
By using a hashtag and feeding your posts into the world of that hashtag, you will extend the number of people that see (reach) and engage with your post. Hashtags simply make your post more discoverable by people who are most probably interested in what you have to offer, thus making it easier for customers to find you – so why not #connect?
This brings us round to the fourth and final thing you need to know when using hashtags: Always make sure that they’re relevant to your brand.
We’ve seen what the power of hashtags can do above, so make sure you’re using hashtags that do in fact align with the ethos, values and/or offerings of your brand. If you don’t, your post will be seen by people following a hashtag that doesn’t properly and perceptibly represent your brand, and won’t necessarily follow your account and support your business. You therefore won’t be able to unlock the hashtag’s full potential, and may not grow your brand, online following and customer base accordingly.
